The Lady of Shalott is a ballad in four parts by Alfred Tennyson about the mythical figure of Elaine. According to legend, Elaine is trapped in a tower. This tower stands on an island in the middle of the river that flows to Camelot. The cursed Elaine is not allowed to look out of the window but only in a magic mirror. One day Lancelot appears to her there and she falls in love with him. She looks out the window because she really wants to see him with her own eyes. This triggers the curse. She tries to get to Kamelot with a boat, but the further she gets from the tower, the more her strength dwindles and she dies before she can reach Kamelot. John William Waterhouse is one of the best-known artists of the Romantic era and a representative of the Pre-Raphaelite and Realist Academy art. His works are characterized by the transfiguration of past epochs, especially the Middle Ages. Thematically, he dealt with antiquity and history in general, but also myths and legends - especially from the British Isles, with the Arthurian legend taking on a special meaning among his works.
