The Suffering of Women in War (Mourning Women) - 1918 - Heinrich Vogeler (1872–1942) Oil on canvas
Johann Heinrich Vogeler was an exceptional artist among German painters: graphic artist, architect, designer, teacher, writer and socialist. The versatile artist achieved great fame through his works from the Art Nouveau period. Heinrich Vogeler first volunteered for the front in 1914 during the First World War and became an intelligence officer in the Carpathians. There he made commissioned works from the war zone, mostly drawings. He developed an expressionist style of painting. Through the experiences he made there, in 1917 he became a radical pacifist and an opponent of the German Empire. He was committed to the revolutionary working class and also changed his previous, more ornamental style significantly. From the early 1920s onwards he increasingly created political motifs. He developed an expressionistic painting style, which can be seen, for example, in the oil painting The Suffering of Women in War (Mourning Women). In 1931, after several previous visits to Russia, he finally went to Moscow. There he began painting in the style of “Socialist Realism”. He developed a closeness to the workers' movement and created a socialist commune with an attached work school in his homeland. He studied Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels and other socialist-influenced authors. After moving his life to Moscow, he was active in the anti-fascist movement against Hitler. After the Nazi troops invaded in 1941, like many other Germans, he was evacuated and came to Kazakhstan. He died there a little later under tragic circumstances in his exile.
