By Max held a professorship at the Munich Academy from 1879 to 1883. In his works, which are close to symbolism, he often processed parapsychological phenomena, spiritism, hypnotism, but also Darwin's natural science or Schopenhauer's philosophy.
One phenomenon that concerned him was that of a woman who claimed to have biblical visions:
The painting shows Anna Catherine Emerick during their late years of life.
In 1802 she entered an Augustinian monastery and her stigmatization and visions became known, which brought with it veneration and defamation. For the past 12 years she has been tied to the bed and haunted by her visions.
Clemens von Brentano wrote down Anna Katharina's visions from 1818 to 1824 and published them - with his own shares - under the title The bitter suffering of our Lord Jesus Christ; the book became a major work of the Catholic late Romanticism.
In 1975 Anna Katharina's bones were transferred to the Holy Cross Church in Dülmen. Mel Gibson processed in 2003 "The Passion of Christ”Their mysticism of suffering.
In 2004 she was canonized by Pope John Paul II.
