Starry Night Over the Rhone was created before Van Gogh's stay in the mental hospital, where later the much more well-known "Starry Night”Should arise.
You can see the gas lanterns above the nocturnal silhouette of Arles, which radiate their warmth against the cold water in their deep yellow and how sharp their intervention in the natural landscape looked. Even if this contrast is not an unusual image for us, it was a novelty in Arles in particular - not even Paris had been illuminated by gas lamps in the night before 1853.
The picture was painted just a minute's walk from the house that Van Gogh was renting at the time and shows a couple in the foreground, similar to “Starry Night”By Edward Munch, but optically the complete opposite of Van Gogh's picture and was the reason for an exhibition in 2015.
The motif of lights and stars in the night has haunted him since he arrived in Arles. This is the case, for example, in the evening café terrace, also painted in Arles in September 1888 (French: Terrasse du café le soir), or the starry night that was created in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in June 1889 (French Nuit étoilée).
Starry Night Over The Rhone was one of the few works by Van Gogh that were ever publicly exhibited before his death. It was part of an 1889 Society des Independents exhibition in Paris.
It was privately owned until 1922 - in fact, Van Gogh was only able to sell a few paintings during his lifetime. They have only been achieving record prices at auctions since the 1980s.
Today he is considered one of the founders of modern painting and the forerunner of Expressionism and his work itself can be assigned to post-impressionism.
