Product description

Ophelia by John Everett Millais: It depicts the eponymous character from Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, floating in a river just before drowning. In the play itself, this is described by Hamlet's mother, Gertrude.

A willow tree tends over brook And shows his gray leaves in the clear stream, With which she fantastically wreaths wreathed From rooster foot, nettles, Maßlieb, cuckoo flowers. There, as she picked up her foliage thread To hang on the lowered branches, A wrong branch broke and fell down The climbing trophies and themselves Into the weeping waters. Her clothes They spread far and carried them Sirens just a little while up, As she sang passages of ancient sages, As if she did not understand her own distress, Like a creature, born and gifted For this element. But it does not last long, Until her clothes, heavy drinking, The poor kid of her tunes Put off in the muddy death.

The painting was made by Millais in two steps: the landscape was created in the scenery, but without the female figure. This was then subsequently incorporated into the picture in his studio. After a few impasses, Millais even had a shelter built for the on-site drawing to protect against the phenomena of winter. The model for the Ophelia was artist Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal. She posed fully clothed in a bathtub but caught a bad cold in the process. Millais, in his eagerness to work, forgot to heat the tub so as not to let the water cool down. However, he paid the model's medical bills and peace was restored between the Siddal family and the artist Millais.

John E. Millais (*1829 – † 1896) was a British painter who was a member of the Pre-Raphaelites and was the first artist to be awarded the hereditary title of “Baronet”. He comes from a middle-class family from Jersey and worked in the British Kingdom.
