The word Nigredo comes from the alchemy and describes absolute blackness or black death - the abyssal and the final.
"In analytical psychology, the nigredo is an expression of depression, lack of energy, loss of libido (libido). Due to the analogy between the individual steps of the alchemical work and the phases of transference and countertransference in the analytic process, the nigredo is understood as a state of inner emptiness and mental standstill, which is due to the psychic incest (coniunctio) triggered by the transference love. The state of inner diffusion and fear of dissolution in the analytic process is expressed by a young female patient complaining that "the world is sinking into the fog again and again".
