Lautrec comes from the time-honored family of the Counts of Toulouse, who achieved a special position in the times of the Crusades, but no longer played a political role during the painter's lifetime and lived in seclusion.
However, securing this property was the reason for Lautrec's hereditary disease - because the marriages were sought in the closer family circle and thus the gene pool became impoverished. He had the torso of an adult but the legs of a child.
His interest and talent for painting was already evident in his early childhood, also because he could not join the children's games due to his physique and he left school, because his decision was already made - he wanted to become a painter.
During his apprenticeship he developed his own technique and art conception and was inspired in Paris by the exhibitions of Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Édouard Manet. During this time he also became friends with Louis Anquetin, Émile Bernard and Vincent van Gogh. He portrayed the latter in 1885 and even wanted to plunge into a duel in 1890 to defend his honor.
His disability drove him into alcoholism and to the marginalized groups of society. Many of his works are portraits from the intermediate world and from brothels.
Young women with red hair originated in the gardens of Monsieur Pere Foret and represents Carmen Gaudin, which he depicts again and again.
He was one of the artists of the Post-Impressionism, Lithography became his hobbyhorse. The French painter and graphic artist was best known for his posters for the Parisian variety show Moulin Rouge. These made the Montmartre entertainer a celebrity and popularized the medium of advertising lithography.
Mt 36 he died of the consequences of his alcoholism and syphilis.
