Product description

The Lament for Icarus (1898)
Herbert James Draper
* 1863 (London) | † 1920

Herbert James Draper was an English painter of the Victorian era.

He learned his craft at the Royal Academy in London and “The Lament of Icarus” from 1898 is one of his most important works. It won a gold medal at the 1900 Paris World's Fair.
Draper mainly specialized in Greek mythology in the 1890s.

It is remarkable in his account of the story of Icarus that the disaster has already happened: the tragic hero of the story is not depicted falling from the sky but lying dead on the ground.

He works with the male body as a projection of subjective emotions. As Icarus melts in the nymph's arms, one can guess that he came too close to the sun and the warm colors and liquid light effects underline this appearance. The image is removed from time - the symbol of epic failure.
Only one detail does not match what you would expect in the image of the fallen Icarus: the wings are still intact. Icarus did not have to flap his bare arms in order not to lose the romantic and symbolic figure of a winged creature.
