Draugr, or Draugar, are also called revenants in the Old Norse deceased, who return to life after their death. In many stories, such as the legend of Asmund and Aran, it tells of how dead flesh is brought back to life and the dead man comes with overwhelming hunger over the living. A Draugr arose when the body of the deceased was not horizontal. Therefore, Draugr were often deliberately created and buried in burial mounds near treasures to protect them. Unlike ghosts, Draugr are physically fit as they were killed and even have a minimum of intelligence to accomplish their task. The old stories tell us that Draugr can also have superhuman abilities, such as extraordinary strength or magical abilities. Under the influence of the revenants, animals and humans fall into madness and those who are not bedded behind closed doors in the safe warmth of his house, are hunted down by the Draugr and eaten, crushed and torn to pieces.
