Deep into that darkness peering,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was not, and the darkness gave no token,
And the only word spoken there is the whispered word, "Lenore!"
This I whispered, and echoed murmured back the word, "Lenore!"
Merely this and nothing more. "
Heavily criticized during his lifetime, the artist is now considered the greatest illustrator and founder of comics and cinema. His talent was manifold: As a draftsman, caricaturist, illustrator, watercolorist, painter and sculptor of the most important genres and formats of his era, he dealt with a range of topics from satirical to religious. He mainly interpreted and illustrated world literature (Dante, Rabelais, Cervantès, La Fontaine) but also works by authors of his time (Balzac, Gautier, Poe, Coleridge). He was particularly fascinated by jugglers, hell, monsters and death - topics that he repeatedly took up. The urgency and gloom is as if made for works of metal.
