Product description

The Gold Beetle (original title The Gold Bug) is a short story from Edgar Allan Poein which, as part of a treasure hunt, the deciphering of a secret code is explained in detail by means of frequency numbers of the individual letters in English texts.
The short story was on 21. and 28. June 1843 first published in the Dollar Newspaper.

A first translation into German by Alfred Mürenberg was probably published by 1881 in the collection Strange Stories in Stuttgart Spemann Verlag.
The story begins on Sullivan's Island, where the narrator visits his friend Legrand, who lives in a hut with his freed slave Jupiter. Legrand tells the narrator to have made an unusual find: a metallic shimmering scarab.
Since Legrand has bestowed the beetle on an enthusiastic entomologist, he is forced to make a sketch of the Scarab on the narrator on an old piece of parchment he discovered on the beach. This is followed by a confusing scene that results from the narrator recognizing the parchment drawing of a skull instead of a beetle.

After a few weeks, Jupiter visits the narrator and hands him a letter from Legrand asking for a visit. In addition, the freed slave reports that his former master apparently lost his mind, which leads Jupiter back to the unholy effect of the gold beetle. When the narrator Legrand makes the desired visit, Legrand, apparently obsessed with the gold fever, persuades him to set out on a treasure hunt. It follows a strange odyssey to a tree on the mainland, in the environment apparently, so Legrand means the treasure is buried.
After Legrand has moved Jupiter to drop the beetle (which Legrand carried all the time like a divining rod) through the eye socket of a skull attached to a branch of the tree, Legrand investigates in a wondrous (and initially erroneous) way the point of excavation. On the second try, the group actually encounters a treasure.

The second part of the story is followed by the dissolution of the strange processes. On the parchment was obviously a strange code in secret ink, which was visible again by heat (hence the confusion about the different drawing). Legrand deciphered this code, which turned out to be a guide to a hidden treasure of the pirate Captain Kidd.
The bric-a-brac around the gold beetle itself on the outer level of the narrative represents nothing more than an elaborate joke by Legrand.
